Quality Control & Inspection

What gets measured, when it gets measured, and which documents you receive with the shipment.

Updated 2026-11-07 · BOXSTK engineering desk

Quality control on custom parts is a sequencing problem. Inspecting only at the end tells you that a batch is bad; it does not tell you which operation made it bad. Our inspection plan attaches a check to each stage of the route so deviations are caught while the parts are still on the machine.

The Five Inspection Stages

StageWhat is checkedOutput
1. Incoming materialGrade by spectrometer, dimensions, mill certificateMaterial receiving record
2. First articleAll dimensioned features against the drawingFAI / dimensional report for approval
3. In-processCritical dimensions at defined intervals, tool wear, fixture driftIn-process QC log
4. Post-processAfter heat treatment or coating: hardness, coating thickness, thread gaugesProcess test report
5. Final100% visual, sampling dimensional, packing count and labelsCOC + packing list

Measurement equipment is calibrated on a fixed schedule and records are kept against the job number. Where a drawing calls for a safety-critical characteristic, we agree the sampling plan and capability requirement with the buyer before production starts.

Documents You Can Request

  • First-article inspection report (FAI) with measured values per balloon number
  • Dimensional report for the production lot
  • EN 10204 3.1 material certificate per heat
  • Hardness, tensile and impact test results
  • Coating thickness and salt-spray test reports
  • RoHS / REACH declarations and CE supporting documentation where applicable
  • PPAP submission for automotive and safety-related parts
Certification and document availability must be confirmed against your specific order. Ask us for the current certificate scans before placing a purchase order — we will send them with the quotation.

Traceability & Packing

Each production lot carries a job number that links the material heat, process route, inspection records and carton labels. Parts are protected individually where surface finish or threads require it, then packed in export cartons on pallets with a packing list that matches the commercial invoice. This matters when a shipment is inspected at destination or when a single part number needs to be traced months later.

Third-Party Inspection

Buyers are welcome to nominate an inspection company for pre-shipment checks. We provide the drawing set, inspection records and access to the lot, and coordinate the visit with the shipping schedule. State this requirement in the RFQ so it is built into the lead time.

FAQ

Related Questions

Do you provide a first-article inspection report?

Yes, on request. We measure all dimensioned features and issue the report for approval before production release.

Can I nominate a third-party inspector?

Yes. Tell us in the RFQ so the visit is included in the production schedule.

Are certificates issued per production lot?

Yes. Material certificates are issued per heat and inspection reports against the actual lot, not a generic template.
